Maro footbridge

The bridge connecting Maro to the Nerja Caves is a step closer to completion , a 65 metre long metal structure (the walkway) now being in place across the highway. However, there is still a fair amount to be done and the project wont be completed, and the bridge officially inaugurated, until June.

The footbridge to connect the Nerja Caves with the village of Maro, which became a bit of a political football during 2008, is now expected to be completed in June 2009.

Botanical gardens for the Nerja Caves

The Nerja Caves Foundation is busy preparing a draft project which will see a 36,000 metre area turned into a huge botanical garden. The draft is expected to be ready in the next couple of months and the project could start in June and be completed in 2010.

Nerja Caves 50th anniversary – first event

The Nerja Caves were discovered on January 12th, 1959, so to mark the start of the 50th anniversary celebrations, the first event will take place on….January 12th. At 12:00 on Monday January 12th, a ceremony will be held at the plaza leading to the Nerja Caves.

Visitors to the Nerja Caves

A total of 410,000 people visited the Nerja Caves during 2008, around 6% less than during 2007. This year is the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the caves.

The number of visitors to the Nerja Caves during the peak holiday months of July and August was down by 7% compared to last year. July saw a decrease in visitor numbers of almost 2%, but August was down by 10.4%.

Visitor numbers to the Nerja Caves during the first three months of this year are up by 14.37% compared to the same period last year, with 70,579 people paying a visit to the town’s main tourist attraction. Part of the reason for the increase is thought to be the fact that Easter was early this year.
