Unique local music festival at the Nerja Caves

The International Festival of Music and Dance, which takes place each July inside the Nerja Caves, is a regular and world renowned annual event. It is the only event to take place within the magnificent caverns. Until now, that is.

50th anniversary activity

The Councilor for Culture, Angélica Portillo, has announced that the committee responsible for organising activities relating to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Nerja Caves has organised activities for June 5th, World Environment Day.

Extended service?

Nerja Council is looking at ways of improving the Tourist Train service, including extending the service to cover Maro and the Nerja Caves. Any such extension is only possible after the Council assumes control of the old N-340 coastal road within the municipality, but this move is already in progress.

Caves discoverers to be honoured

Things continue to move rapidly as the Council unanimously approves a motion to award recognition to the five discoverers of the Nerja Caves in 1959, an event which changed Nerja forever.

Movement on the botanical gardens front

The PP spokesperson, José Miguel García Jimena, announced to day that the Council has just received a letter from the Department of Environment of the Junta de Andalucía requesting permission to construct a botanical garden in the area by the Nerja Caves known as Pinar y Dehesa del Río Chillar.

Still no news on land for the proposed botanical gardens

The spokesperson for the Opposition PSOE and head of the Nerja Caves Foundation, Ángel Ramírez, has been pressing the Council to speed-up proceedings relating to the transfer of lands for the proposed new botanical gardens at the Nerja Caves.

The Councillor for Tourism, José Miguel García, is urging the Junta de Andalucía and the Málaga Provincial Council to become financially involved in the construction of the new museum in Paseo Nuevo.

Grants for local Associations

The Nerja Caves Foundation is offering economic grants to local Associations who are fully legalised. Applications can be made from now until March 31st 2009. Applications forms and further information can be collected at the Nerja Caves or at the Nerja Foreigners Department at the Town Hall. Completed applications should be presented at the Nerja Caves Office.
