To commemorate World Environment Day, Torrox Council inaugurated a new waste recycling centre – punto limpio – in Llano de la Almazara. Various local dignitaries were on hand for the ceremony.
New urban garden of medicinal plants
The Council has created an urban garden of medicinal plants in the central Castillo area of the town, planting twenty examples of local flora.
Another attempt to approve budget spending
The minority PSOE government in Torrox has presented a new proposal to the Treasury Information Commission and Special Accounts to resolve various discrepancies in another attempt to approve the 2013 budget and initiate infrastructure spending of around €1.3 million. So far, all the opposition groups (IU, PP, PIU and PA) have soundly rejected the budget proposals.
Proposal for new service station
Torrox Council has approved a draft project for the construction of service stations on either side of the A-7 exit to the town. The Council has recently started reclassifying plots of land in the area to allow for construction projects.
Cultural exchange
A group of French students and teachers from Fontainebleau have been spending the past few weeks with families in Torrox as part of a cultural exchange project in conjunction with the IES Alfaguar. Students from Torrox will be travelling to France in July to improve their French language skills.
Torrox Council proposing to amend PGOU
Torrox Council is proposing to modify the PGOU (General Plan) to allow construction on both sides of the road connecting the A-7 with the N-340, between Barranco Plano and the coast. This area is currently classified as specially protected and cannot be developed, something the Council wants to see changed.
Earth Hour comes to Torrox
Torrox Council has decided to join ‘Earth Hour’ (Saturday from 20:30 to 21:30) with the implementation of measures to save on energy costs and is urging residents to join in as well as promoting responsible ebergy consumption habits throughout the year.
Proposed job creation scheme in Torrox
The Councillor for Employment, Lauren Salvatierra (PSOE), is proposing a new Employment Plan aimed at encouraging the hiring of employees and the creation of new businesses.
Torrox on the SICTED trail
Torrox Council is endeavouring to promote the SICTED certification system (Spanish Tourism Quality System) so that local companies can obtain a ‘quality certificate’ for their services. The SICTED system covers such concepts quality, competitiveness, profitability and sustainability.
Council sets up Citizen Social Network
Torrox Council has set up the Citizen Social Network, a group of volunteers who will collect and distribute basic necessities to the more needy in the community.
