Council saves on recycling costs

During the period April to June, 69,000 kilos of agricultural plastic have been recycled without any cost to the municipal coffers, thanks to an agreement signed with the company Salas, Suministros y Recuperaciones Industriales. Under the previous arrangement, the same task would have cost the Council €14,400.

Loss of Blue Flag status criticised

The Association of Merchants and Entrepreneurs of Torrox (ASECOT) and the local PP have criticised the government for the loss of the Blue Flag status for El Morch beach, saying that it damages the tourist image of the resort. The Mayor, Francisco Muñoz, replied that he did not know the reasons for the withdrawal of the Blue Flag status.

Lack of taxis adapted for disabled access

Residents and taxi professionals in Torrox have complained about the lack of vehicles adapted for the disabled, with many people having to order suitable taxis from neighbouring towns. The Mayor, Francisco Muñoz (PSOE), recognises the deficiency but has no plans to rectify the situation at the current time.  

Marina project moving along

The Public Ports Authority of Andalucia, a dependency of the Ministry of Public Works of the Junta de Andalucia, has apparently completed the draft project for the construction of a new marina in Torrox and is in the process of completing the environmental impact report.

10% reduction in IBI in Torrox

Torrox Council has approved a motion to reduce IBI (Property Tax) by 10% next year as compensation for the increase imposed by the Central Government in December 2011. The rate will go from 7.7% to 7%.

Helicopter rescue off the coast of Torrox

Two people were rescued by helicopter on Sunday after their boat began sinking about 40 miles off the Torrox coast. The crew of the six metre boat were found clinging to the sinking vessel and were airlifted to Málaga airport. One had mild hypothermia otherwise both were in good health.

IU in Torrox reject pact proposal

The IU in Torrox has rejected a proposal made by the PP to form a pact and share the position of Mayor, eighteen months for the PP and eighteen months for the IU, in a bid to oust the current minority government of Francisco Muñoz (PSOE).

Bilingual education in Torrox

Parents of students at the CEIP Los Llanos in Torrox Costa are requesting the Ministry of Education of the Junta de Andalucia to implement and maintain the programme of bilingual education in all the schools in the municipality, namely CEIP Los Llanos, CEIP El Faro, CEIP El Morche and IES Alfaguar.
