Nerja closes camper van parks

Two sites at El Playazo beach set up as parking areas for camper vans just three months ago have been ordered to close by the Municipal Council.

The Nerja Council has decreed the closing of the two sites on the grounds that the ongoing activities do not comply with terms of the original licence. The sites, set up by Valero Jímenz, were licensed by the Nerja Council for the purpose of the parking of camper vans and caravans. Sanitation facilities and a small kiosk were installed on the site.

However, there is a bit of a party political war going on at the moment in Nerja between the ruling Partido Popular and the opposition Socialist PSOE. Suddenly, the PSOE decided to denounce the sites on the grounds that the owner has no licence to operate a campsite and that the land is classified as protected, agricultural land which does not permit the installation of infrastructure, namely sanitation.

The denuncia follows hot on the heels of a Nerja Council decision to halt work on a pedestrian footbridge connecting the village of Maro and the Nerja Caves, a project undertaken by the PSOE controlled Nerja Caves Foundation.

Meanwhile, Alvaro Jímenez, who has invested €120,000 in the sites and firmly believes that he has all the necessary permits from all the various municipal, provincial and regional authorities, has closed the facilities rather than wait and risk them being sealed by the police.

This, of course, means that the owners of such vehicles will have to go back to parking here, there and anywhere. A consequence of this, as has been evident in the past, is that some inconsiderate or lazy owners will leave piles of rubbish in their wake. Great for the all important ‘image’!!

But that’s politics. A bit naive to think that our duly elected representatives are actually in office to represent us and our best interests.
