Work begins on El Chucho beach

Nerja El ChuchoWork has started on the new promenade at El Chucho beach.

The long-term objective is to have one huge walkway, or promenade, basically stretching from Torrecilla beach (at Plaza Fabrica de los Cangrejos) to El Playazo beach (ending at the Marinas de Nerja). El Chucho is the linking section between Torrecilla and El Playazo.

The whole plan is obviously some years from completion, as the existing landowners/occupiers at El Playazo still have to be compensated for the eventual loss of their lands and all the various plans have to be drawn up, drafted, redrafted, submitted for approval etc etc.

El Playazo beach is currently undeveloped and has a rustic charm all of its own and a very ‘Spanish’ feel or atmosphere. It is something that sets it apart from other beaches in the area, makes it that little bit different. It is something that many residents and visitors comment upon, all hoping that it will maintain its rustic charm and not become ‘just another beach’ with all the usual trappings- sky tv, all day breakfasts, souvenir shops….and a general increase in prices!

One can easily imagine it becoming a second Burriana beach, almost a clone, which many believe would be a mistake. Whilst Burriana has its own merits, one such beach is probably sufficient, otherwise everything becomes just the same wherever you go.

The current prevailing thinking, with the emphasis on image, development and a specific type of tourism makes this eventuality the most likely outcome, unfortunately.

We have been coming to Nerja for the last ten years mainly because it has still got the spanish charm and the lovely walk along unspoilt El Plazo beach with the few little bars etc.If this part of Nerja is built on it will ruin the place and be just like any other cheap spanish resort, with all day breakfasts etc.and will loose the genuine spanish bars and food and people. What a shame.
