Dubious honour

The road between Maro and Almuñecar, the old N-340 coast road, has the dubious honour of being classified as the third most dangerous stretch of road in the country according to a risk assessment study carried out by EuroRAP in conjunction with the Royal Automobile Club of Spain.

The study is based on the period 2005 to 2007 and uses volume of traffic and number of accidents to determine the results.

An average of 10,000 vehicles per day used the the N-340 between Maro and Almuñecar during the period under study and there were 12 fatalities and 61 serious injuries.

According to the survey, the top three most dangerous roads are:

1. The N-322 in Albacete between km412 and km424, with 2,300 vehicles per day, 2 fatalities and 14 seriously injured.

2. The N-211 in Teruel between km226 and km240, with 2,077 vehicles per day, 4 fatalities and 16 seriously injured.

3. The N-340 between Maro and Almuñecar, with 10,000 vehicles per day, 16 fatalities and 61 seriously injured.
