Paseo de los Carabineros

The Paseo de los Carabineros is once again on the Council agenda and a new approach is set to be made to the Department of Coasts. The Nerja Council has, on numerous occasions, asked the Department of Coasts to take the necessary steps to reopen the Paseo de los Carabineros, the walkway connecting the Balcón de Europa with Burriana beach. An excellent walkway for those who remember it.

The Paseo was closed in 2001 after a series of rockslides, and has remained closed ever since. On March 28th 2009, the new head of the Department of Coasts, Francisco Hermoso, visited Nerja and the subject was once again discussed.

The answer from Francisco Hermoso was apparently that any reopening of the Paseo would not be in the short or medium term due to the technical difficulties involved with any project to prevent further rockslides. There have not, incidentally, been further rockslides in the area since the closure.

The Council is now set to request the Department of Coasts to streamline their efforts to at least reopen part of the walkway, considered a valuable tourist asset. The Council points out that in 2004, a project was commissioned by the Ministry of Environment to stabilize part of the area near the Parador. The cost of this project was €140,886 and it was even posted in the Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE) – Official State Bulletin.

The Council also points out that, since the closure of the walkway, municipal employees have been unable to clean in the area and, as a result, it is somewhat run down.
