Musings…

Sad to see the demise of El Cangrejo after all these years, an excellent tapas bar full of atmosphere. The rumours are that one of the owners did a midnight runner with the cash and stock, something one has always been more accustomed to hearing about in relation to foreign owners of premises.

Hopefully the bar will reopen again at some point, preferably still as a typical tapas bar.

A few carriages around town the past week or so, although only being hired out for weddings. On Saturday, one was being drawn by five magnificent beasts and with the bride’s veil (or whatever the correct terminology is for the entire headpiece) draped over the back of the carriage and almost, but not quite, to the ground, it looked most impressive.

We have a new square, Plaza Cronista Pepe Pascual, above the Verano Azul underground car park (highly unlikely to be beneath it…unless of course it was land being offered by the Council for a project to be carried out by the Nerja Caves Foundation, such is the political animosity these days).

Pepe Pascual

Strange, always got the impression from his writing in SUR that he was taller. Ah well.

It is a large square, but as with Plaza de España, it is a bit bare. Great, as with Plaza de España, for holding large events but with not even a shop or a cafe (preferably) in sight, a bit short on atmosphere or character. Hopefully, though, that will all change. At some time. Maybe. After the summer? To coincide with the inauguration of the sewage plant, perhaps?

Talking of sewage, the waters have been exceptionally clear recently.

Maro beach and El Playazo have been added to the list of EU ‘Blue Flag’ beaches, prompting numerous comments about how this can happen in a town without sewage facilities.

Currently, under EU laws or guidelines, a sewage plant is not a prerequisite for obtaining the coveted ‘Blue Flag’ award. There are plans to change this situation in the future and make it a prerequisite, but that could be quite some way off. In the meantime, it’s a question of make the most of the clear days and avoid swimming when the proverbial slick appears, otherwise you’ll find yourself just going through the motions.
