12 killed in rail tragedy in Barcelona

Twelve people have died and many others have been injured, some of them critically, after they were hit by a train at Castelldefels Playa station in Barcelona.

The incident occurred at 23:30 on Wednesday night.

A commuter train arrived at the station and a large group of people decided to cross the tracks rather than use the station underpass. At that moment a high-speed passenger train came through the station, mowing down those on the tracks.

Most of those who were killed were young people arriving to take part in local festivities. It is the worst rail accident in Spain since 2003, when 19 people were killed when two trains collided near the central town of Chinchilla.
