Project to attract Scandinavian tourists

During the tourist boom of the 1960’s, both in Nerja and along the Costa del Sol in general, visitors from the Scandinavian countries played a prominent role in the success of the tourist industry. However, in recent years, the number of Scandinavian visitors has been slowly declining, replaced by national tourism and visitors from, in the main, Britain and Germany.

A number of local businesses now want to recover the Scandinavian markets and their first step has been to set up a website where potential visitors can book such things as flights, hotels and restaurants directly and without leaving the comfort of their own home.

The overall project includes not only the creation and promotion of this website (www.destinationnerja.se), but also a complete and varied destination awareness campaign in the media, press and via the internet in the three Nordic countries, although the start will be made primarily in Sweden.

In total, the project budget of €400,000 euros, although due to current economic difficulties, this will be divided into several phases over the coming years.

The chairman of the Asociación de Empresarios y del Centro Comercial Abierto de Nerja, Antonio Villasclaras, believes that it is necessary to concentrate very heavily on attracting tourists from the Nordic countries because it is a market with high purchasing power.
