Nun implicated in stolen babies case in Madrid

The judge of the Court of Instruction Number 47 in Madrid is investigating a nun implicated in the theft of babies in the 1970’s during the Franco regime.

Gómez Valbuena, known as Sister Mary, worked in the maternity ward of the Santa Cristina hospital in Madrid and is accused of false imprisonment relating to a ‘missing persons’ case in 1970.

Sister Mary is linked to Dr Eduardo Vela, also implicated in the plot. The Public Prosecutor is currently awaiting the results of DNA tests carried out on one set of bones found during two exhumations at La Almudena cemetery. The DNA is being checked against that of a mother who was told that her baby had died but suspects that it was stolen.
