Atlético win the Spanish Super Cup

The second leg of the Spanish Super Cup was a totally different affair from the first encounter, Atlético matching their star-studded city rivals from the very start.

Mario Mandzukic scored his first goal for Atlético, slotting the ball home after just one minute. And that’s the way it stayed until the end. Real ended the match with ten men as Luka Modric was sent packing after being booked for a second time. They were lucky not to have been down to nine men, Ramos once again escaping punishment, just as he did in the first leg.

The Atlético manager, Diego Simeone, once again finished a match in the stands after being ordered off the field by the referee for patting the fourth official on the head during a ‘discussion’.

It was a more exciting encounter than the first leg, very evenly matched, but Real rarely threatened to score and there were disappointing performances from Bale, Kroos, Benzema and, when he came on as a substitute, Cristiano Ronaldo.

So, 1-0 on the night to Atlético and 2-1 on aggregate. Diego Simeone has now led the Rojiblancos to the La Liga title, the Europa League, Copa del Rey and Uefa Super Cup during his three years in charge.
