Torrox resident wins €66,980.50 on the Primitiva

A lucky resident in Torrox won €66,980.50 on the Primitiva lottery on Saturday, matching five numbers plus the bonus number. No-one managed to get all six numbers so the jackpot next time out could be a cool €4.1 million.

Clean-up campaign

Torrox Council has begun a campaign to try and obtain the cooperation of residents in keeping the town clean, especially relating to the removal of animal excrement from the thoroughfares.

Council saves on recycling costs

During the period April to June, 69,000 kilos of agricultural plastic have been recycled without any cost to the municipal coffers, thanks to an agreement signed with the company Salas, Suministros y Recuperaciones Industriales. Under the previous arrangement, the same task would have cost the Council €14,400.

Fatality on El Morche beach, Torrox

A 47 year old teacher from Zafarraya, Granada, who was on holiday and spending the day with friends in Torrox, drowned yesterday on El Morche beach.

Loss of Blue Flag status criticised

The Association of Merchants and Entrepreneurs of Torrox (ASECOT) and the local PP have criticised the government for the loss of the Blue Flag status for El Morch beach, saying that it damages the tourist image of the resort. The Mayor, Francisco Muñoz, replied that he did not know the reasons for the withdrawal of the Blue Flag status.

Lack of taxis adapted for disabled access

Residents and taxi professionals in Torrox have complained about the lack of vehicles adapted for the disabled, with many people having to order suitable taxis from neighbouring towns. The Mayor, Francisco Muñoz (PSOE), recognises the deficiency but has no plans to rectify the situation at the current time.  

Opposition forces change to taxi licence renewal cost

The Opposition groups in Torrox, PP, IU, PIU and PSA, have forced the modification of rates relating to the cost of renewing municipal taxi licences following complaints by the professionals in the town.

10% reduction in IBI in Torrox

Torrox Council has approved a motion to reduce IBI (Property Tax) by 10% next year as compensation for the increase imposed by the Central Government in December 2011. The rate will go from 7.7% to 7%.

Helicopter rescue off the coast of Torrox

Two people were rescued by helicopter on Sunday after their boat began sinking about 40 miles off the Torrox coast. The crew of the six metre boat were found clinging to the sinking vessel and were airlifted to Málaga airport. One had mild hypothermia otherwise both were in good health.
