Nerja market – an open letter from a reader

The Nerja market, its absence, its forcible removal from the centre of town, has been a subject of much debate now for many months.

Here, in full, is an open letter we received today from one of our readers. Feel free to add your comments.

An open letter of concern!! It is with much regret that I and many other visitors from all over the world read about the removal of the Nerja Market from its established site. Our family have been regular visitors to Nerja over the last twelve years, and remember the last time it was forced to move because of some nonsense at that time.

Do the politicians in Nerja realise that many regular Tourist visitors to Nerja choose to come because they enjoy the features of the town, part of which is/was the easy access to its once splendid markets in a central position.

The proposed move is (as a visitor) to me reason enough for our family to change our holiday venue to Fuengirola!!.

Many visitors and friends of ours that have stayed in Nerja this year, 2009, tell us its like a large piece of the town’s personality has been removed!!.

I am sure the politicians who have allowed this to happen do not realise what they are going to do to the future of tourism in Nerja by moving this lovely old piece of Nerja’s heritage to a position that is just not suitable for tourists to go to.

Many of us stay at The Riu Monica, and are at the bottom of the town’s many hills and slopes, and many of us are of an older generation and will no longer be able to visit the markets in their new position!!. thank goodness Torrox has more sense than Nerja, even though taking the bus will be almost a must,

The forthcoming visit for my family will probably be the last time we shall bring our custom to Nerja owing to the market problems. We are intending to come once more to a town which we as a family feel a part of, if only to kiss it goodbye!! It is possible that reading the reports, so will the Market Traders bless their cotton socks!!

Let us hope that the instigators of this move will come to their senses, and let us hope that someone is monitoring the numbers of tourists that for sure will drop!!

Thank goodness that the internet enables us to read of these events and to at least put our points of view as very interested parties.

GOOD LUCK!! TO THE MARKET TRADERS in their fight!!

Regards
Weirpond from England

I could not agree more, this very eloquentley written letter just about captures the sentiments of many people that I and my wife have spoken to.We also have been coming to Nerja for many years, but we cannot understand or believe some of the current administration decisions that are being made, with the market situation probably the worst. Using the local people as a smoke screen “it was not us that wanted it moving” is deplorable. With the decisions taken over the Burrianna and music, I hope I did not say music too loud, Nerja is indeed in grave danger of loosing all credibility.

From what I can gather the Town Hall don’t give two hoots about what business people, residents and tourists think about the move It’s ok for torrox, Torre del Mar and other towns to have their markets in the centre. The new site is crazy to say it has been specially prepared for the market shows somebodies should be sacked, one narrow entrance in and out, one (very Happy bar) to serve all the “visitors” and most definately not enough parking it’s bad enough at the carboot sale, but they got away with it, so let’s make sure anyone who can will vote these morons out in the nexr election.

I am touched to tears by the open letter… So much support from most foreigners and so much indifference and repression from the ones who “hold the frying-pan on the handle”. As a market trader, I feel absolutely beaten by now, up at Almijara, but we will be there to serve you. Don’t forget it’s on trial there for 6 months. Claim busses and tourist train to the market, and let the townhall and the touristoffice hear YOUR opinion, which should be the most important one. Hope to see you on the market, allthough I know many of you will or must resist…
