The Vélez-Málaga tram system has had yet another reprieve as the Mayor, Francisco Delgado (PP), announced that it would not now stop functioning until April 2012 in the hope that any new government in Andalucia will oblige by providing funding.
The Mayor has reached an agreement with the transport concessionaire Travelsa whereby the municipal transport system will be bus only. If no funding is forthcoming for the tram system, the mayor sees no alternative but to sell the trams.
The Council is becoming further in debt as the tram system continues and the municipal transport system, bus and tram, closed 2011 with a deficit of €2.2 million. Passenger numbers on the tram, which connects Vélez-Málaga with Torre del Mar (although seemingly not taking people to where they actually want to go) have been in serious decline since the first year of operation, which was 2005.
