Used clothing 2009

During 2009, a total of 16,900 kilos of used clothing were collected in Nerja ready to be sorted, processed and redistributed for various good causes.

The organisation HUMANA operates clothing recycling programmes in the autonomous regions of Cataluña, Madrid, Castilla La Mancha, Galicia, Andalucía, Asturias and Valencia with the sorting and processing facilities being located in Granada and L’Ametlla del Vallès (Barcelona).

The clothing is first sorted and classified before being distributed. There is clothing destined for Africa, quality clothing for sale in second hand shops in Spain and inferior quality clothing destined either for sale or donation for industrial recycling.

HUMANA is a humanitarian organisation started in 1987 which carries out a number of co-operative projects, mainly in Africa.

The best month in Nerja was June 2009 with 3,642 kilos, the worst was February with 436 kilos. Still good, though.

Containers, such as the ones in Punto Limpio, are designed to make it easy for people to donate their unwanted items rather than throwing them in the normal rubbish bins or bags.
