Record mango harvest in 2014

The 2014 mango season in the Axarquia district produced a record harvest of 20 million kilos and revenues up by 75% on 2013.

Shark hoax

A flurry of activity on social networks, particularly Twitter and Facebook, indicating the presence of large sharks and the closure of some beaches in the Axarquia has been dismissed as a hoax by the Civil Protection.

With the summer come the thieves

As soon as the summer arrives in the Axarquia district, so do the well-organised gangs who pilfer the mango and avocado orchards of the local farmers. In the past two days alone, around 4,000 kilos of fruits have been stolen.

New wave of burglaries in the Axarquia

For the second time so far this year, the Guardia Civil has been forced to set up a special unit to try and combat a spate of robberies occurring in various, often isolated dwellings throughout the Axarquia. In Alcaucín alone there have been twenty burglaries in the past month.

Mango production on the increase in the Axarquia

According to the head of the cooperative Trops, mango production in the Axarquia is likely equal that of avocados within the next four years. Avocado production is around 30,000 tons per year. In 2011, mango production was 4,000 tons and in 2012 it will be between 8,000 and 9,000 tons.

Fruit thieves arrested in Vélez-Málaga

Four people have been arrested in Vélez-Málaga as the alleged perpetrators of the theft of 6,000 kilos of mangoes and 2,400 kilos of avocados from various farms in the Axarquia.
